What to bring to CF|24

What to bring to CF|24

Get your game on

WHAT TO TELL YOUR ATHLETES TO BRING - CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING:

  • Clothes for working out 24 times (probably don't need 24 changes :-) )

  • Towels/toiletries to shower

  • Sleeping gear (mattress, sleeping bag, hammock, pillow, ear plugs, sleep mask, sheets, blanket, etc..)

  • Camping chair

  • Water bottles

  • WOD accessories (lifting shoes, wraps, gloves, sleeves, bandeezies, skipping ropes, etc...)

  • Can do attitude

  • Food - Depending on what your box is organizing for food, you will need to bring sustenance for the 24 hours. Think of things you can eat and then workout in less than 50 minutes from time of consumption. Think trail mix, protein shakes, jerky, fruit, veggies, sweet potatoes.

  • Entertainment (iPod, iPad, headphones, speakers, whatever you think will fight off the sleep deprivation madness)

  • Positive mindset

  • WOD List - Available October 6th

In this section, we will feature our CF24 participants as they tell us why participating in CF24 and supporting Special Olympics Canada Foundation is important to them!

Meet Arden, from Rock Jungle CrossFit in Edmonton Alberta:

"CF|24 was at first thought, a overwhelming (even frightening?) idea. After only being active in Crossfit for a short amount of time, I knew how trying 1 WOD can be, never mind 24! But the challenge struck a very personal cord for me. Exactly a year ago I had undergone my second knee surgery and was left deflated on bed rest staring up at the mountain of recovery ahead of me. I knew how hard the first recovery was and that this time would be worse, as this injury was more severe. The initial healing progressed on target, until about 3 months in when my knee blew up and my recovery took a huge step back. For several months that followed I tried to claw back the progression I had previously had after surgery with little avail. I became depressed and was ready to accept the fate that I wouldn't be able to participate in the sports I loved, run with my dog again or hike the mountains where I fell in love with my partner.

Fast forward through another month of self-pity and too many pints of ice-cream to be proud of.. I became mad. Mad that an injury was going to limit every activity in my future and define who I was going to be. I had started doing research into naturopathic alternatives and signed up for prolo-therapy. My belief in what those "experimental" treatments did for my recovery is an entire other conversation, but to keep in short; I would not be where I am today without it. I finally started to scale my mountain again, and I wasn't wasting time- I had to make up for lost ground. I started to blow the minds of the physicians who had saw me plateau for so many months prior and I was strength training religiously outside of physio.

I yearned to get involved with sports again, but feared the idea of taking one bad hit would land me back in a hospital bed. That's where Crossfit came in. It fills every desire of mine to be on a competitive team, but with control and guidance from the coaches, and support from the community. I've truly reclaimed my sense of self through this sport, and although my struggles were mild and my mountain was small in comparison to what the athletes who dream to compete in the Special Olympics must face each day. It's my goal to honour those that feel like every day is their own version of CF|24, when basic errands can feel like WOD's. My heart and admiration go to those who are scaling their own mountains, and won't stop until they summit.

It would be remiss of me not to properly acknowledge the reason why you are reaching out to me specifically; the generosity of my pledge contributors. My family and friends have all been incredibly selfless through the donations they've put forward and the love and support I've received on my journey into this. With a special mention to Lyle Melenka of Synergy Respiratory Care who donated $1000.00 personally to support such a great cause. None of this would be possible for me without them, and the support of my teammates/coworkers  IW 720 (Ironworkers Local Union 720 in Edmonton). We're all excited to encroach on our personal pledge goals and give our best effort for every WOD during the event!"
